I recommend giving Tide a try. Even if you only use it once a month. Tide is able to really dig in there and get out smells.

Hi Autumn!
I just read your post on rinsing after finding it through googling "cloth diapers and dead animal smell." Oh my word, the smell is so bad! They come out smelling perfectly fine, but after pee they stink, and after 2-3 days in the pail the dead animal smell about knocked me off my feet when I walked in my son's room! I am weary of using bleach as both diapers I use, Fuzzibunz & Best Bottoms, say no bleach. But I'm desperate, so desperate.
I use Bac-Out in the first rinse, and switched from Charlie's to Country Save not too long ago. I feel like the smells have been worse since switching, but all about the same time we also started solids and I ordered more inserts so I go a little longer between washings (2.5-3 days instead of 2).
Please help!

I'd just do a long soak in RnG Hard Rock and super hot water in the bath tub. Break it up into 2 groups with that many prefolds.

Hi Autumn,

First, thank you for such a great site! My husband and I are expecting our first child (a girl!) in May and I've read most of the content on the site to get ready to CD our little girl!

I recently bought a HUGE package of DSQ prefolds on Craigslist (about 40 infant and 30 regular size). The mom I purchased them from said she just got too lazy to keep up with cloth diapering, and most of them haven't even been used. However, she did wash all of them...in regular detergent and downy fabric softener! I have bought Rock N' Green...do you think if I just re-wash them a few times with Rock N' Green they should be alright? I'm worried that they'll have a weird buildup now from Tide.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Autumn! I just want to tell you first of all - thank you for your wonderful blog! I would not have known at all where to go if not for your wonderful advice!
However I am nearing the end of my rope with my cloth diapers. I love everything about them except that for the past 2 months my son has experienced an off and on diaper rash whenever wearing his cloth. We had a successful 5 months before that, but I don't know what to do next. I originally used Charlie's soap and have switched from that to Country Save to Tide to Rockin Green, and so far, nothing has worked. I have an old-school top loader, not HE. I have tried repeated stripping, Calgon, vinegar rinses, bac-out, anything I've heard of. I don't smell any ammonia and his rash is not characteristic of yeast. I want to keep cloth diapering, but I can't stand to see my baby cry and itch his bum every time the diaper's off. What would you recommend?

Thank you! We are thrilled to be welcoming her.

As for the bleach wash, many days the laundry is in use from 8am till 5pm due to the laundry-centric neighbor. If I have to rinse the residue everytime I'll think we'll have a backup pile of dirties, as often enough happens with our normal laundry. We live in San Francisco, aka Fog City. We'd be able to line dry but not regularly. I'm considering just buying CD friendly fabric softener in bulk and telling her to use as much as she wants as long as she doesn't use the other stuff. We love our place but sharing laundry is the one caveat that makes moving seem like a good idea. Alas...

Thank you so much for your blog. It's so helpful. I'll be heading to a local shop that teaches CD classes to get the 411 for our area but I needed all the info here to get my main concerns set aside.

you could run an empty bleach load to clean out the softener residue, wipe down the rubber door seal and clean out the detergent compartment. all these things will help reduce "contamination". can you hang your diapers to dry? the dryer sheet residue will be a pain to try and remove every time.

congratulations on your first baby!! what a blessing!

Hi Autumn,

We are expecting our first baby in May and I'm 90% sure I want to CD. The hinderance is that we share a washer and dryer with two other units. One of our neighbors does no less than 3 loads a day and she doesn't follow guidelines even for our front loading HE machine. (uses regular detergent, always closes the door and soap drawer, washes 3 dish towels at a time, etc...) After I read your post about fabric softeners I became really unsure because she uses both liquid softeners and dryer sheets from discount stores. That is to say she would only use a CD friendly softener if we bought it for her monthly. I don't want to make CDing a big deal in the building because our neighbors might think it's gross but it's high on my list of things I'd like to do for baby. Do you have any advice?
