I have a 9 month old boy that I have been cloth diapering from the beginning. We are using a combo of BG4.0 and Fuzzibunz. I use RG detergent. This is my second kiddo that I have cloth diapered. Never had any issues until he was 6 months. He started getting a rash above his groin. Diaper creams cleared it up, but it would come right back once he was in the cloths. I tried the grapefruit seed extract thinking it may be yeast, but that did not work. After many trips to the Dr. they decided that it must just be eczema. I have had him in disposables for about a month bc our washing machine has been broken (no fun!) and the rash stayed away the whole time. Came right back as soon as I put him in cloth. But now it's everywhere the diaper touches. Really red irritated skin. I think it's definitely something caused by the cloth but I have no idea what! We haven't changed our diapers or methods of washing since the beginning and he was fine for the first 6 months. Could he have developed an allergy to the micro suede after being fine for 6 months? Any suggestions are appreciated!!

I have 2 daughters. Maggie is 3.5 and Natalie is 1.
We only CD'd Maggie for a few days and stopped because we didn't have a washer and dryer and it was such a barrier for us.
We wanted so badly to CD Natalie but are on a VERY tight budget. We are very low income, and it has gotten better in the last year, but still at the point where we can pay bills on time, not a lot of wiggle room. We were very blessed to be donated 12 BumGenius One Size diaps (I don't know what generation. Some have velcro and others have snaps?) and bought a few Mother Ease diaps and covers second hand but Natalie grew out of them by the time she was 9 months old! We started doing disposables "until we could figure something out" and we have yet to do that. It's really easy to get back into the habit of doing disposable.
So here is what I am looking for. We need some big kid overnight diaps/ training pants for Maggie. She needs a very high rise and wears a size girls 6x! We make em' big around here! I would really only need 2-3. She wears GoodNights disposable bedtime pants right now to bed and in the car when there might not be a possibility of stopping to potty anywhere.
For Natalie we would like to get back into CD'ing full time but just don't know what type of diap to get, and how to afford it. She is also a very big girl. She wears a 3T and would also need a very high rise. (Hubby is 6'6" and I am 6' (: )
I would say we will need 10-12 so that I could wash every day and a half, but anything is a good start.
The biggest problem is finding something the right size and then transitioning. We are spending money on the disposables, so there isn't really any money to be put towards buying cloth. We trust that if it's in God's will he will provide a way, but does anyone have any suggestions on how they transitioned? I was thinking along the lines of buying smaller bags of disposables and putting the remainder of what we would have spent into a cloth diaper fund, but I'm just not sure how to work it. Any body have any suggestions on brands/ styles that might work for our super tall girls? Natalie also has kind of chunky thighs and the BumGenius started cutting into her before they became too small around the waist and in the rise.
Thanks so much!
Love the blog and loving the forum!

My daughter just turned one & we were exclusively cd for about 3 months. Then the problems started. We started having severe odor problems first. So I stripped & started using vinegar in a pre-wash rinse cycle, as well as adding a full cycle extra post-wash rinse. (All in all 2 1/2 to 3 full cycles each time I would wash.) After having to replace my large wet-bag, which wasn't cheap, I contacted the bag manufacturer about my wash regimen since I didn't want to ruin this bag. They didn't recommend using vinegar (but I still every once in a while use a 1/4 cup in the pre-rinse) & suggested I wasn't using enough detergent & that I should only have to do 1 extra rinse (bringing the total down to 2 full cycles).

Now, however, even though the odor is still under control, we are having problems with leaks! I don't know if she's peeing more or if it's something else. I just bought a few hemp inserts to see if they help, but when I double up it can be bulky & her clothes don't fit right. I was under the impression that you shouldn't have to strip that often. So what should I do?

Oh, if it matters, we have a varried stash. We use one size diapers & have Alva, Bumz in Style, Kawaii (my fav), Krocket Pockets, & a no name dg. our inserts are Babyland, Alva, & QQ, & we have microfiber (3 & 4 layers), bamboo/microfiber blend (I think 3 layer), bamboo/cotton blend (I think 5 layer), 1 charcoal/cotton blend (not sure how many layers), & in the hemp I bought 2-3 layer & 1-4 layer. The Babyland inserts are the bamboo/cotton (& the one charcoal) & were doing the best. They were my favorites! But even they too now leak... I'm just getting frustrated & discouraged.

He will get one or two, they take forever to heal and in a few days he will get one again. I haven't changed soap (Rockin Green) or the way I wash (I wash every third day and strip once a month). I use a combination of pockets and GroVia hybrids. He doesn't act like they hurt but they look terrible. It is not a rash in anyway but a blister. Any ideas???

My daughter is 9 months old and we've been using Flip diapers since she was 2 months old and have loved them but I've started getting lots of leaks and I'm not sure why. When she leaks, the cover on the inside of her leg is wet which is what is getting her clothes wet. Can the covers begin leaking over time? Is there anything to do to stop this?
I don't think its the pads but I may try stripping them anyway. How much vinegar do I put in for a soak? I did pour water on them and they absorbed pretty quickly, only a small bit beaded up.
The strange thing is that she doesn't seem to leak at daycare but she constantly is at home. I think as she's become more mobile the legs have started leaking. She's quite skinny for her size but considering we are still using them on the smallest setting and we've been using them on that setting since she was 2 months old, I don't think that's the problem. I did try going up a size but went back because she was leaking. Now we're leaking on the small size too.
Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Lisa

After reading a bunch of great reviews on wet bags, I just switched from a dry pail to Monkey Foot Designs wet bags. I'm loving the convenience of the wet bag, and the prints are absolutely darling! They seem very well made and high quality. However, I'm experiencing major stink issues with them, which I'm so bummed about! I wash every other day, but by the time wash day rolls around, my bathroom smells so terrible, it's embarrassing! Good thing I don't have company over very often. I notice the smell leaking mostly from the zipper area of the wet bag. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? What do you do to keep your bathroom (or changing area) smelling good and not like a bag full of day old diapers?

I'm fairly new to CD, and I'm really loving most aspects of it. It's been so much easier than I expected. But I really dislike all the trial and error I have to go through to find the perfect diapers and routine for us. Ugh! Any suggestions would be much appreciated! :-)

I've tried stripping them and it hasn't helped. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. I use rockin green detergent. I use 1-2 tsp per small load. I hang to dry. I'm thinking that maybe she's just sensitive to the inner cloth. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, I am a new mom and cloth diapering my almost 3 week old. During his first week of life he developed a yeast rash right around only his anal opening that was pretty easily treated with medicated ointment (nystatin) and I used liners in his diapers while we were doing that. Things were great for about another week but in the last few days he has developed a very red bottom that is getting worse. It isn't raised or bumpy like the yeast, it's just red and angry-looking.

This new rash is again right around his anal opening but is now spreading onto his little butt cheeks. It got a lot worse yesterday--he had several bowel movements yesterday, which is unusual for him. He is formula fed so he usually only poops a couple times a day. I am using prefolds and covers but also tried a one size pocket last night to see if it would keep him a little drier. I change him at least once every 3-4 hours before he eats, sometimes more, and use cloth wipes with water and a little Homestead Baby wipes companion concentrate. When his bum was looking good I was using the Angel Baby Earth Mama bottom balm. Now that it is looking so red I am using California Baby diaper cream which is zinc oxide based (it says it is safe for cd's but I am using liners just in case). Wash routine: cold rinse, hot wash cycle with 1.5 Tbsp Rockin Green, cold rinse. I have checked that there are no suds in the last rinse cycle.

I gave him a bath today with baking soda in the bath water and have tried to let him air out a little every day, even though he hates it.

I'm just not sure what to do at this point. It seems to me like his poop is the most likely culprit, but nothing I'm doing is helping and things are getting worse despite me trying to use the barrier cream starting yesterday. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks.

I have three month twins. I started CD 5 weeks ago. Right now the girls weigh about 13 pounds. The problems I was expecting with CD aren't an issue at all! The washing isn't a big deal, they are very easy to use (I use prefolds/covers and bumGenius pockets), and they are easy to travel out of the house with. I was not expecting how bulky they are. There is so much padding it's hard for the babies to move or sit up in. Is anyone else having this problem? I do not have the budget to buy diapers for two babies in different sizes, especially since we will probably not have anymore children (we also have a todler). That's why I have bumgenius one size and covers that are one size. Any suggestions? Anyone else feeling this way?

She was in a Goodmama my friend had given me. I thought it was weird that she had a rash, and it looks pretty intense. Well I remembered talk of ammonia and I smelt the diaper...I think it has a slight ammonia smell, but I'm not entirely sure.

My daughter is only 6 weeks old, so should her wet diapers even be causeing ammonia build up at this point? I thought that only started when incorporating other foods other then breast milk?

How do I treat it if it is an ammonia burn, just diaper rash cream? And should I try stripping all of her diapers again, or just wash them like crazy?

I read Autum's posts on ammonia, I've gotten some info on some other sites but nothing seems to work. First of all let me tell you what my routine was and then what my new routine is. Old: sprayed with Bac-Out then in pail until wash, wash every third day, cold rinse, hot wash with 3tbs of Rockin Green Hard Rock on a top loader, two cold rinses.

New: no more Bac-Out, I use Calgon every wash (very hard water in Ohio), wash every other day, warm rinse, cold rinse, hot wash with 2 scoops of Tiny bubbles (told is great on hard water) two cold rinses.

To treat my problem I have stripped with dawn, switched detergents, added a water softener, and lastly I did a 24 soak with RLR then many cold rinses--just last night, yet the first diaper DS peed on had a HUGE ammonia stink! So bad it burns my nose. :(

The only thing left I can think of is to boil my MF inserts, but what do I do with natural fabric with buttons like my Sbish OBFs or my GroVia soakers that have a PUL layer?

I'm so frustrated and confused.
I have been successfully CDing my DS for 14 months, and he could wear anything. Organic, cotton prefolds, microfiber, suedecloth. Anything! Now, all of a sudden, he gets horrible rashes whenever he poops and I don't get to it right away. His whole butt is red and sometimes, when it's really bad, it's like open sores on each butt cheek. I'm so frustrated, and quite frankly, my husband is pretty ticked off and ready to throw in the towel. I've tried everything I can think of: boiling, soaking overnight, stripping in the wash, Tide, Country save, Sun Oxy, switching to all cotton, switching back to stay-dry, all to no avail. The only thing that solves it is using disposables with regular diaper rash cream until it clears up. Then, after an intense stripping session, I try cloth again. Once he has a good poop, the cycle starts all over again. I don't know what else to do. I'm so confused, especially since for 14 months there was no issue :-(

I need help! I don't know what the problem is! My 6 month old is leaking through almost every diaper and I am almost ready to quit cloth diapering! He is soaked every morning from shoulders to knees and I have to change clothes 2-3 times during the day as well. I pretty much only have Bum Genius 4.0's and the newer Freetime ones and have loved them until the last few weeks. I have tried stripping with the Rockin Green soak in my top loader with hard water and it seemed to help for a week or so. Then I thought maybe they were leaking because I hadn't dried the inserts in the dryer but it didn't seem to help when I dried the next batch. If I have been using the Rockin' Green for a couple months, should I try something else to strip them like RLR instead? Or the Dawn soap - however you do that? I soaked the diapers for about 45 minutes because I read somewhere you shouldn't do it for longer than an hour with the PUL on the diapers because it will damage it. I only use Grandma El's diaper cream and can't think of anything else that would cause the leaking! I thought about the sizing issue as well and have had him on the middle snaps because he's almost 20 pounds. I tried unsnapping them all the way and he just leaks at the crotch instead of the tummy or back. Wouldn't that seem to imply it's a stripping issue? I don't want to quit and prove the naysayers right about cloth diapers leaking all the time! Can anyone help?

I am looking for diapers and/or covers that don't have to be stuffed, can be wiped down and reused without washing (I need less laundry to have to deal with), and isn't bulky. I would like have the option of mixing and matching inserts and diapers depending on my needs. For inserts I would like ones that are not bulky, but very absorbant, and soft for babies skin. I do have two kids in different sizes, so one size seems nice. However the one size seems to add bulkiness when set at a smaller size. I tried one on my 4 month old and it kept his legs wide spread and looked uncomfortable. I am opposed to buying different sizes, but it would by more cost effective to have one size. Bulkiness is more of a problem than buying multiple sizes.

I bought four different diapers to check out and plan on returning two after simply trying on my baby. I purchased a bumgenius one size 4.0, a charlie banana one size, a flip one size, and a gdiaper size medium. The bumgenius does not fit my need to reuse the shell by simply replacing the insert. Neither does the charlie banana. The flip does fit this requirement, but was rather bulky (on my 4 month old and okay on my 22 month old) with the insert provided. I thought I might keep this one and look into less bulky, but absorbent (to stop leaks) inserts. The gdiaper was the least bulkiest and so far is my top pick for fit. I have only tried all of these diapers on my two babies, and have not tested them, because I want to be able to return them until I know what I am doing. It seems that with the gdiaper and flip I could probably interchange inserts that would suit my needs of being not bulky, absorbent, and soft. Recommendations please!?!?

Hello! I started cloth diapering my son in March and fell in love with it. I dove head first into the Bum Genius 4.0. I always knew he had sensitive skin and when we switched to the cloth diapers his little butt was so clean and free of irritation.

In April we discovered my son has a pretty bad case of eczema, explaining his very sensitive skin. Any irritants on his skin cause red patches and itchy skin. This means poo is a pretty big cluprit. If we leave it on his skin at all it seams he breaks out into a red diaper rash and we have to go back to disposable diapers. While we try like crazy to keep on top of the diaper changes in the cloth the issue is he keeps "sneaky pooing" and we are right back into the disposables again. It's a vicious cycle.

The best thing I can do for him is to put a cream on him every diaper change to have a barrier on his skin. I have seen a few other similar posts on here and saw the suggested creams but I am afraid to use them on the Bum Genius because on their site they make it sound like if I use diaper cream on them they will be ruined forever with no chance of return.

Has anyone had experience using a cream with the Bum Genius 4.0 and not had them self destruct? :) I would love to keep using them and not be a few hunders dollars in the hole on something I loved but can't use anymore.

(Side note - I have read about putting in inserts inside the diaper against the cream to protect the diaper but the diapers are already so bulky I can't see adding more bulk to that and another thing to keep track of.)

Thank you in advance for your help, I don't want to throw in the towel just yet!

Hello!

I am Jaime, mom to a 10 month old boy. We have been CD since the beginning with prefolds, pockets, fitteds, etc. A total mix of diapers. We went 7 months before we had any issues. We live in Arizona and have extremely hard water.

The problems started shortly after we replaced our old fashioned top loader with a top loader HE :(

Washing routine: Wet bag until wash, then cold rinse, then hot wash with 2 cold rinses with 1Tbsp Rockin Green Hard Rock. Everything is line dried.

The first issue at 7 months was horrible smell (not ammonia) after he would wet. Then he developed a horrible diaper rash - an irritant dermatitis that required steroid cream and disposables for a week :(. We stripped first with RLR and when that didn't work, we used Rockin Green Funk Rock. I assumed we had detergent or mineral buildup.

We have a local CD store that was guiding me with the stripping and issues. When I strip, I put all diapers into the bathtub, hot water, some boiling water, and add 4T of Funk Rock, and then rinse at least 5-6 times and make sure no bubbles.

We then did well for about a month and the same problem occurred, and we stripped again.

That lasted for about a month and then we developed horrible ammonia smell. We stripped again, and now a month later ammonia is coming back.

I am at a loss for what to do. Stripping takes me a good 2-3 days and it is driving me crazy to have to do it once/month. Especially after going 7 months with no issues!!!

Help!!! My husband loves our cloth dipes but is sooo close to giving up!

Thanks.

So my son has been using cloth diapers since one and a half months old, i was loving it for the longest then we got the first real bad rash, Strep on his bottom back in December, had to use disposables for a couple weeks so his bottom could clear and cause he had creams that weren't cd safe and antibiotic to be on. So we cleanse them I used bleach cause a couple other cding friends told me to use it. So after his bottom cleared up and the diapers had been disinfected and cleansed we switched back which i was thrilled because i think of cloth diapers as softer to the bum and cute as well. So then he had a staph infection in march, then it cleared up with treatment(cream n antibiotic) and disinfecting diapers, then he got yeast in April and then in may he had irritation and a open sore i forgot exactly what it was called but it has almost cleared up but this past week he got his first ear infection, well i should actually say double ear infection, my poor 15 month old. I have switched to tide original powder a few weeks ago after smelling an ammonia smell after changing his diaper, they smell clean from the dryer. I also have been using 15 drops of gfse i thought it would keep away yucky crap (any rash, bacteria and yeast) which i have found out i guess i should not be using every wash so i wont use all the time. I am really frustrated cause the yeast may not have been any fault with cding the dr said that the antibiotics could have caused it and most likely have this time, but all of the other antibiotics he had been on in the past could be why he keeps having rash issues. i was using coconut oil every diaper change and plan to continue once his bottom is cleared from this yeast currently we are using nystatin cream and oral bad thing is his dr previously did not do it for the previous yeast we had in the past few months i forgot exactly when cause it has been one thing or the other with his poor bottom. I hope i don't sound like a bad mother cause i do everything and anything i can for my son as most would do for their own child too. I just am at loss of what to do cause it seems as i have done everything. i had bought calgon to use for the moderately hard water we have here in Knoxville,Tn but was told by other local momma's that i didn't need to use it so i took it back and bought the tide plain regular powder in hopes i could get the funk tamed in my diapers soon. I am no longer using my microfiber inserts use and only using prefolds to stuff pockets or on my covers/ai2's. My stash is mainly pocket diapers, fuzzibunz mediums and i have giggle life one size pockets i have two softbums that are the all in twos where your supposed to use snap in inserts which i don't own, so i lay the prefolds on them and i have one bummis medium cover, i also use burp cloths we no longer use for our son. If you have any suggestions let me know or have overcame these problems or similar issues let me know i would love hearing some success stories and methods to cleanse/disinfect diapers as well anything really good for my little man's bottom would be greatly appreciated. It kills me to see his bottom hurt so bad but i think maybe the disposables and the cream and oral medicine will clear it up for this time. i just hope i can solve the diaper issue on the cloth :(

I have a son who is 1 year old. I have been trying to do c/d since he was 11.5 months. We were doing fine with disposables with no problems what so ever, but the $ was adding up for something we were just throwing away and add to the landfill so I was ready to try something new. Being a new mom not knowing anyone doing c/d as well as just buying the diapers on amazon not knowing there is alot to know about cloth. I took them out of the box , putting them on my son, and washed them only once with no extra rinse in the same soap that I use for his clothes (era) and using ( shout) for the poo ( yes super stupid), we ended up with a diaper rash on his poor little bum. During this time we were making plenty of other of changes including transitioning him to whole milk ( now on organic soy to take out that variable), and he had his first fever( I thought uti since he started to cry with diaper change- this was ruled out by his dr. And rash came a day later.

I own 13 pocket Charlie banana diapers and after the problem started using 13 aio bum Genious organic diapers. Since I have read up on washing routines I have changed what I have done by rinsing the original poorly washed diapers like mad- at least 5 times at first. Now I have been using a dry diaper pail for all diapers ( the same one I used with my disposables (munchkin - and it adds small amounts of baking soda when pail closed. Washing every 2 days, I put them in a he front loading washer and was once with cold and rinse cold, then add 1 teaspoon rocking green detergent to a warm wash cold rinse. And run another cycle cold/cold with no detergent with and extra rinse. I take the diapers out and let than dry by the window on a clothes rack.

I try to change the diaper every 2 hours and at night he will sleep in the diaper 8-12 hours. Despite this he still gets bright read around his bottom, inner thighs, and under his boy parts. Redness looks like tiny raised pimples. When he is switched to diaposibles it seems to go away. I have recently tried grovias roll on diaper rash ointment with no avail...

I don't know what is left to do other than strip them but I am afraid of putting dawn in my He washer , making the diapers soapy?. And I don't want to wash in super hot water bc this voids the warranty via both companies.

Has Anyone had a similar problem? Know a solution? Am in desperate need for help!

These are my only pockets that are not stay dry. Do I have to do something different. Thoughts?

We're going through a bit of a CD rough patch. I think I have a plan, but I'm looking for a sanity check - I'm cheap and don't like to jump in head first without thinking (or over thinking) things through. Sorry in advance for the long post.

My wife and I have been using prefolds since just after birth - our daughter is 14 months now. We're both tall people and as such, have a big baby - she was almost 25 pounds and 32 inches at one year. We've loved the prefolds mostly because they're cheap, simple, and cheap. We've mostly relied on cotton prefolds with some hemp thrown in for longer stretches. Over the last month or so she's really fallen in love with drinking loads and loads of water, so she's been wetting through them like there's no tomorrow. Understandably my wife's fuse with the situation is growing short. I've been doing reading and some research trying to come up with a good strategy, but moving beyond the world of prefolds is intimidating. Here are my thoughts on what's going on and what I'm thinking of trying based on what I've read/heard.

I'm thinking she's grown out of the "premium" size prefolds. they're technically suggested up to 30 lbs - we're probably not quite there yet, but I'm thinking it's close enough to where the amount of cotton there just isn't enough.

She's done better in the hemp, but has we through those as well - sometime within minutes of putting the diaper on. First I thought they weren't absorbing - maybe something off with our washing. I took them through the paces and the hemps are absorbing fine. The folks at my local diaper shop suggested that the problem may be that she' peeing too fast and while hemp can hold large quantities of liquid, it is a slower absorbing fiber compared to say micro fiber or bamboo. They suggested that maybe putting something else like microfiber in on top of the hemp might help (or maybe move to a pocket which would do the same thing). Do you all think this is a reasonable explanation for what might be happening?

So here's what I'm thinking....I'm not crazy about the idea of moving up in cotton prefold size - I think at this point the cotton just isn't going to hold enough even at the bigger size. Changing a super active 14 month old every 45 minutes just isn't a viable option. Adding something to the hemp sounds ok....but that's another step of origami to an already challenging diaper change with the hemp prefold, so I'm not crazy about that idea.

I'm left thinking that the best option is to try pockets, in the large size, using hemp inserts or our hemp prefolds as filler. I think the advantage here is it will make the changes easier than the prefolds. Hopefully they'll help with the absorbency, since there will be two materials together - the hemp stuffer and whatever the pocket is made of which hypothetically will absorb quickly. Does this make sense? What else have people done to deal with big kids that wet a ton? Any advice on good and durable pockets that will get our super sized daughter through potty training? All thoughts and adive are much appreciate. Life was much simpler with pre folds - I don't like having too many options :(.

-Nick (dad to Ola-14 months)

My daughter has been getting large red areas on her thighs recently. It's very warm to the touch and seems like it hurts her. The red marks are only on the outside of her diaper and stop right where her diaper begins. Our main diaper is made up of almost all pocket diapers. We have been cloth diapering for just over a year the whole time with pocket diapers and have never had this problem so I don't think it's a sensitivity to the PUL. However, since she has no rash inside the diaper I'm not sure what else it could be because it doesn't really look like chaffing to me. Now though my son is constantly crying in his cloth (perfectly happy when we put a disposable on).
