We're going through a bit of a CD rough patch. I think I have a plan, but I'm looking for a sanity check - I'm cheap and don't like to jump in head first without thinking (or over thinking) things through. Sorry in advance for the long post.
My wife and I have been using prefolds since just after birth - our daughter is 14 months now. We're both tall people and as such, have a big baby - she was almost 25 pounds and 32 inches at one year. We've loved the prefolds mostly because they're cheap, simple, and cheap. We've mostly relied on cotton prefolds with some hemp thrown in for longer stretches. Over the last month or so she's really fallen in love with drinking loads and loads of water, so she's been wetting through them like there's no tomorrow. Understandably my wife's fuse with the situation is growing short. I've been doing reading and some research trying to come up with a good strategy, but moving beyond the world of prefolds is intimidating. Here are my thoughts on what's going on and what I'm thinking of trying based on what I've read/heard.
I'm thinking she's grown out of the "premium" size prefolds. they're technically suggested up to 30 lbs - we're probably not quite there yet, but I'm thinking it's close enough to where the amount of cotton there just isn't enough.
She's done better in the hemp, but has we through those as well - sometime within minutes of putting the diaper on. First I thought they weren't absorbing - maybe something off with our washing. I took them through the paces and the hemps are absorbing fine. The folks at my local diaper shop suggested that the problem may be that she' peeing too fast and while hemp can hold large quantities of liquid, it is a slower absorbing fiber compared to say micro fiber or bamboo. They suggested that maybe putting something else like microfiber in on top of the hemp might help (or maybe move to a pocket which would do the same thing). Do you all think this is a reasonable explanation for what might be happening?
So here's what I'm thinking....I'm not crazy about the idea of moving up in cotton prefold size - I think at this point the cotton just isn't going to hold enough even at the bigger size. Changing a super active 14 month old every 45 minutes just isn't a viable option. Adding something to the hemp sounds ok....but that's another step of origami to an already challenging diaper change with the hemp prefold, so I'm not crazy about that idea.
I'm left thinking that the best option is to try pockets, in the large size, using hemp inserts or our hemp prefolds as filler. I think the advantage here is it will make the changes easier than the prefolds. Hopefully they'll help with the absorbency, since there will be two materials together - the hemp stuffer and whatever the pocket is made of which hypothetically will absorb quickly. Does this make sense? What else have people done to deal with big kids that wet a ton? Any advice on good and durable pockets that will get our super sized daughter through potty training? All thoughts and adive are much appreciate. Life was much simpler with pre folds - I don't like having too many options :(.
