I am Jaime, mom to a 10 month old boy. We have been CD since the beginning with prefolds, pockets, fitteds, etc. A total mix of diapers. We went 7 months before we had any issues. We live in Arizona and have extremely hard water.
The problems started shortly after we replaced our old fashioned top loader with a top loader HE :(
Washing routine: Wet bag until wash, then cold rinse, then hot wash with 2 cold rinses with 1Tbsp Rockin Green Hard Rock. Everything is line dried.
The first issue at 7 months was horrible smell (not ammonia) after he would wet. Then he developed a horrible diaper rash - an irritant dermatitis that required steroid cream and disposables for a week :(. We stripped first with RLR and when that didn't work, we used Rockin Green Funk Rock. I assumed we had detergent or mineral buildup.
We have a local CD store that was guiding me with the stripping and issues. When I strip, I put all diapers into the bathtub, hot water, some boiling water, and add 4T of Funk Rock, and then rinse at least 5-6 times and make sure no bubbles.
We then did well for about a month and the same problem occurred, and we stripped again.
That lasted for about a month and then we developed horrible ammonia smell. We stripped again, and now a month later ammonia is coming back.
I am at a loss for what to do. Stripping takes me a good 2-3 days and it is driving me crazy to have to do it once/month. Especially after going 7 months with no issues!!!
Help!!! My husband loves our cloth dipes but is sooo close to giving up!
Have you tried stripping with blue dawn? After your diapers are clean, run a load with maybe a tablespoon of it. Rinse until there's no more bubbles. I second calgon though. I use 1/8 cup every load (I have a front loader though).
