I am seriously considering cloth diapering and am just in the midst of doing research. Right now, I make my own detergent with borax, washing soda, and a bar of ivory soap. Can I use that on cloth diapers?
http://pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm Ivory snow isn't recommended. Cloth mamas that make their own soap seem to use equal parts washing soda, borax and oxygen cleaner (something free of dyes and perfumes). I haven't tried it personally though. Doubt it would work in my hard water.
Store-bought laundry soap can be expensive and often contains harsh chemicals and unnecessary dyes. If you are looking for an economical and safe alternative, consider making your own laundry soap at home, then it is really nice. A baby's skin is softer and more susceptible to rashes and even eczema because of irritation. One major source of irritation is the baby products used on his skin every day, from cloth diapers. Borax is a naturally occurring mineral that acts as a laundry whitener and deodorizer. Look for a brand called 20 Mules Team. If you cannot find it, any brand of borax will work. So, you use your own detergent with borax, washing soda, and a bar of ivory soap is really fantastic. Dove and Ivory are good choices for your child.
