Ok, so upfront confession…I washed something in my wash machine that I probably shouldn’t have. :\"> My son peed on a dense foam exercise mat (thin, very dense and soft, not a rubber yoga mat or the foamie’s you sleep on) so I put it in the wash. Lesson learned that wasn’t a good idea. :-< Now every time I wash my diapers, especially the hemp, bamboo and microfiber inserts/doublers as well as the microfleece liners and the fleece side of my sons fuzzibunz washcloths (cotton side is not affected), they are covered with a blueish tinged lint. The cotton inserts and prefolds don’t seem as bad. I’ve washed regular laundry – towels, clothes, etc. and they aren’t affected.
I asked my local diaper store and they told me the weave in hemp and bamboo is looser (or was it tighter, ugh!) so would absorbent more (i.e. the lint) and therefore really “attracts” things. They suggested putting the diapers in the freezer and see if you can pick it out which didn’t really work.
The only thing I can think of is to use a sweater shaver (which I don’t have but would buy) which would be a short term fix. My mom gave me a callus remover (unused) that you use for removing dead skin/calluses during a pedicure. Really, I need to figure out how to get the lint out of my wash machine. It’s a Kenmore front loader and the technician is coming later in the week.
My son now has a mild rash that isn’t really going away so I’m wondering if this is the reason? It’s mainly just these little red dots and splotches – nothing raised, pus filled or anything like that. I’ve tried earth mama angel baby, coconut oil, baby bottom better, Clotrimazole and a local one that is CD friendly. We have naked time/air dry as much as possible, wash after poos, etc. It gets better, then comes back, etc. I’ve mainly been using the diapers that aren’t as bad – the cotton inserts and prefolds during but we use the hemp trifold in bumgenius pockets overnight or a hemp doubler with a cotton prefold. Now when I wash the BG’s, they are getting worse. I washed the diapers at my parents house last night so that the ones that weren’t as bad wouldn’t get worse.
I should probably be more worried about the $1000 wash machine but I’m worried I’ve caused LO’s rash and ruined my diapers. :(
Any suggestions? Is this contributing to LO’s rash? Have I ruined my diapers?
It's good the technician is coming out. Your lint trap in your washing machine is most likely full of the bits from that mat. I would use a washing machine cleaner after your technician does that for you. I use one Clorox makes on a monthly basis. Then you should strip your diapers with blue dawn (1 tsp) and 1/4 cup bleach. That's what I do everytime DS gets a lingering rash. I wouldn't worry too much about the lint. Dry them in the dryer and they'll eventually fall off.
Thanks mrsgintoft. Do front loaders have lint traps? I thought those were only in top loaders?
So the washing machine cleaner can just be bought at a grocery store or like a Walmart?
I've heard you shouldn't use dawn on front loaders as is can wreck the machine??? Would that only be if you used large amounts and it created lots of suds?
I tried the dryer as well (just airfluff) and no change. :(
Front loaders have them too. Believe me. I couldn't figure out why my machine wasn't draining and the technician came and found 2 of my bamboobie nursing pads in the lint trap (I blamed my husband for losing them). Yes Walmart will have the cleaner. 1 tsp of dawn creates just enough suds and cleaning power. Not an excessive amount that comes foaming out of the machine. My liquid tide suds more than 1 tsp of dawn does. Try low heat for drying them. Air fluff just kind of tosses them around.
