Soft water + top loader --> vinegar soak Soft water + front loader --> bathtub vinegar soak Hard water + top loader --> RLR or Hard Rock soak Hard water + front loader --> " " in bathtub
I miss my top loader!! It was so easy to fill the basin and let the diapers sit then drain and spin. Using the bathtub is a pain. I get cramps from wringing out dozens of diapers!
What additive has brought you most success?
I failed to mention what I do first before doing a soak. I try switching up the detergent to see if they just need a good cleaning. If I have been using a "green" detergent I use Tide and see if that helps.

I love RLR! I'll do a short soak every month or two and haven't had a return of ammonia. I've also started using it on our normal laundry occasionally & it has really helped freshen up our whites,
How much RLR would you recommend using to soak a load of diapers? I really need to strip my diapers. I have really hard well water. I've just been putting it off. I think RLR would be a good thing to try, but I wasn't sure how much to use. I have a top loader (got rid of my front loader b/c I hated it!) so I can soak directly in the machine.

I think I need help with stripping my diapers. My 6 month old is leaking through almost every diaper and I am almost ready to quit cloth diapering! He is soaked every morning from shoulders to knees and I have to change clothes 2-3 times during the day as well. I pretty much only have Bum Genius 4.0's and the newer Freetime ones and have loved them until the last few weeks. I have done the formula given above for my top loader with hard water and soaked them in Rockin' Green (love that detergent!) and it seemed to help for a week or so. Then I thought maybe they were leaking because I hadn't dried the inserts in the dryer but it didn't seem to help when I dried the next batch. If I have been using the Rockin' Green for a couple months, should I try something else to strip them like Autumn mentioned in the first entry? Like using the RLR instead? Or the Dawn soap - however you do that? I soaked the diapers for about 45 minutes because I read somewhere you shouldn't do it for longer than an hour with the PUL on the diapers because it will damage it. I only use Grandma El's diaper cream and can't think of anything else that would cause the leaking! I thought about the sizing issue as well and have had him on the middle snaps because he's almost 20 pounds. I tried unsnapping them all the way and he just leaks at the crotch instead of the tummy or back. Wouldn't that seem to imply it's a stripping issue? I don't want to quit and prove the naysayers right about cloth diapers leaking all the time! Can anyone help?
I wanted to see if you had any luck? Have you ever held the insert under water and seen if they were repelling? I am curious becuase I feel like I have buildup on my microfiber inserts.... If I hold one (clean) over the washer when it's filling I put a handful of water over it and it beads off. Is this a very common problem with the micro fiber or not so much? I have tried the Dawn with bleach. And I feel like it may have helped a small bit. I have done the RLR and I feel like that helped too. But it took many many rinses to have clear water. Just wanted to see what eventually worked for you. Thanks
I'm about to strip for the first time and I have a question. I plan to use just hot water and try to turn my pocket diapers inside-out. We'll will see if this works. However I was wondering if I can boil the inserts? Will this work better than hot water washes? They don't have elastic or PUL to ruin. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this.
I have been very blessed to receive a lot of hand-me-down cloth diapers from a friend. (7 good mama's, 4 Katydid's, 2 bum-genuis 4.0, 2 dream-Eze size Large). She had to stop using CDs because the place her family is renting has very hard water and no water softner. She told me that they should all work well as long as I strip them.
I have a top loader, that is quite old, from the late 80's..it seems to work just fine and we don't have any problems washing clothes. So to strip the diapers all I need to do is a vinegar soak? Or are there additional steps?
