Many ask what my personal washing routine is, here you go:
Store cloth diapers in a Monkey Foot Designs wet bag. Washing Machine= Samsung steam front loader Prewash= 3 squirts of Bac Out. Cycle= Normal, low spin, heavy soiled, cold/cold. Wash= (currently) 1 heaping + 1 half scoop of Country Save. Cycle= Heavy Duty, low spin, heavy soiled, hot/cold. 2nd Wash= no detergent. Cycle= Normal, high spin, heavy soiled, warm/warm.
Dry in dryer on timed cycle for 2hrs.
I prefer to use Tide but am currently out.

9 months into cd and I'm still figuring out the wash routine. I use pockets and fitteds that need stuffing. Stuffing includes prefolds, microfiber inserts, and hemp inserts.
Currently this is my method: Kenmore Front Loader, soft-ish water which is very alkaline Soak with 1 cup vinegar in cold, no spin (39 minutes) Wash on Heavy cycle (hot/cold, heavy soil, extra rinse, reg spin) with 1/4 cup borax, 1 tsp All free and clear, and vinegar rinse. (57 minutes) Rinse/spin with cold water. (19 minutes)
45 minutes on high in dryer, pockets are hung to dry
I started adding the vinegar in the soak, as that seems to help get rid of the ammonia smell. I decided to try this as the vinegar is acidic and could help balance with very alkaline water to help rinse out the also alkaline ammonia. Vinegar is about the only acidic cleaning agent I can figure out. I'm open to more ideas, though!

I'm going to have to start playing around w/ my wash routine due to diaper rash... I have a Kenmore front loader. Right now my routine is Hot/cold wash w/ prewash and second rinse. 1 tbs of charlie's soap and 1/4 cup of vinegar. I put a thick towel in w/ the diapers to try to get more water. It was working well for a bit but lately my dd has had a rash. Should I try stripping the diapers? I heard wetting the towel first might "trick" the washer to add more water. Any tips are appreciated. I really don't want to have to do two washes. The cycle I do now takes 2 hours.

Before I did anything I'd try something that cleans deeper than Charlie's. Tide, Country Save, Planet, even something really terrible like Gain ( :P ). You'll be surprised at the difference after using a "soapy" cleanser. I wouldn't recommend long term use of something like Gain or All but they will strip the buildup.
Do you have a spin setting on your machine? If so set it to low until the final rinse.

I'm new to cloth diapering. Started my 21 month old a few weeks ago and plan on cloth diapering my new baby when 'it' arrives in July. Already i am having problem with stink, as in it stinks coming out of the washer or dryer. Ive used Tide (regular powder) and now i have moved on to Ecos free and clear (liquid). I have a front loader and have hard (?? Well water with high iron and magnesium) water. My current wash cycle is this: Spray with Bac out and soak in bucket (i wash every day- Started out dry pail but figured i try soaking to combat smell) Normal wash on cold extra water no spin (to keep them wet for next round) with a little baking soda in prewash. Bulky wash on hot (bulky ads an extra spin), extra rinse, ecos up to the 1 line. 2 more speed washes 1 plain rinse and spin. (basically i feel like im stripping at each wash, takes me like 6 hours to complete a wash cycle)
I smell each diaper coming out, smells 'ok', I smell something, not sure if its clean or left over bac out, or soap residue, but it isnt a refreshing this smells so wonderful smell. lol put in dryer, smell coming out and they STINK.
Ive also put Vinegar in rinse. Calgon in rinse and in wash. Tea Tree oil drops in wash and rinse. Oxiclean in wash and in rinse. (all at different times of course) Ive used one tablespoon of tide to up to line 2 on the scoop.
The only thing that makes my stink go away is bleach. Which yeah is bad, but they no longer smell!
Any other soap suggestions? Or does laundry just become a 6 hour a day project? with Bleach deteriorating my diapers?
Hard well water is a pain. No more vinegar though, ok :) Vinegar is a bad combo with hard water.
What types of diapers are you using?
I wish I could tell you a detergent to go buy and all your problems would be solved. Honestly, my diapers don't smell fresh when I take them out of the washer. I miss the days of soft water.
I have used Tide, bumGenius, Country Save, Rockin Green, Crunchy Clean, Clean B, EcoNuts, EcoSprout, and others I can't think of without a consistent smell free performance. Dropps is good at giving you a good deep clean. All the ones I listed are great detergents just for my water they only work for a little while.
It really is a trial and error. But, it shouldn't take 6 hours. At most you should be doing 3 cycles (prewash, wash, extra cycle for rinse). But 3 isn't necessary for everyone.
One thing I did notice in your post is that you were only using 1TB of Tide. For hard water you need to use a lot more than that. You might give that a try first. Use more than you think you should, run an extra rinse and see how that works.

Thank you much! I think maybe i was going overboard on the Bac-Out too. So i stopped that for this go round. I also used ecos last wash it gets very very sudsy and i dont notice a smell, but i got to line dry that time too. With Tide, i at first did the 1/4 of the recommended level per your wash, which was about a tablespoon. When they smelled terrible, i upped it to a level one. Next go round a level one and a half. Still smelled, then i did the bleach. Im thinking that maybe the bleach killed my over doing of bac-out? It is for sure a trial and error process. Next on my list was to try the Country Save then Rocking Green. Then if i still have problems, i may invest in an old beat up top loader with agitator. im using cheapie pockets (sunbaby, alva, kawaii)
After seeing so many say Tide is what they use, I decided to give it a try. My diapers are generally 'okay' and only stink once Peanut has peed in them -- but, like Venusjems said, there was never a "oh, smells fresh" feeling just after the diapers were washed.
First impression -- Tide is stinky in and of itself! Well, perhaps stinky is the wrong word -- strongly perfumed. I've finally gotten the detergent into sealed containers to contain the perfume. But, the diapers did seem cleaner after that first wash (if a bit too aromatic). After the second wash, where I used much less detergent, no overwhelming perfume -- and they smell pretty good (as in clean). I figure I'll give it a month before declaring one way or another.
I'm also using a lot more of my cotton prefolds and homemade, cotton inserts. They just seem to wash clean better and easier than the microfiber inserts.

@Autumn-My wash routine is similar to yours. I also use bac-out, I use bg detergent, I only have bg diapers-lots of microfiber and some hemp and bamboo doublers. I was wondering if your wash routine has changed since February when this was posted? If so, can you tell us what it is now? I noticed you said you prefer Tide, but other posts I've read (from you I think...I've read so many now!) said that Tide can cause problems long term. You said you use 3 squirts of bac out-is that just 3 squirts per load? or do you spray each liner? I have heard that bac out works better when it has time to sit and soak into the liners so I TRY to remove the liner after a diaper change and squirt it before putting it into the pail so it can penetrate the microfiber. If I don't do that, then I end up squirting each liner before I throw it into the wash. Maybe I'm using too much bac-out?lol They don't smell like it after my cold wash, hot wash with detergent, and sanitary (very hot wash) with no detergent. I have lots of questions but maybe you can just start by answering these...oh how I wish you could just come to my house and help me solve all my diaper issues!!!
I have stopped using Tide as of 2 weeks ago. I'm still in search of a detergent that gives my diapers that good clean smell. I'm experimenting with several right now....so I'll let you know soon what works for me. I squirt 3 squirts of Bacout in the basin for a prewash.

Here is what I love... No CD friendly detergents over here. I was sold ECOS baby by a CD manufacturer and it gave me repelling issues and a uggly ammonia burn sore:( and besides it costed 10 dls. I used a powder Mexican detergent Blanca Nieves (Snow White) and it is working. They smell ok. I know you can come to Mexico, but a friend that lives in Austin was able to get a big bag for 3dlls !! Funny right? Is a pink bag with a little girl handwashing (no related to snow white)

All these fancy washers! I have a ghetto old top loader which I love. :)
I do pre-wash cold with a bit of Planet detergent (I switched brands because of buildup but still had a bunch leftover) Wash Hot/Cold with extra rinse with about 3/4 a scoop of Country Save + a big squirt of Grapefruit Seed Extract (we have reoccurring yest problems!) 2nd wash hot/cold - no detergent
Sure it takes FOREVER, but the extra wash means I never have to strip!
My wash routine will probably seem skimpy compared to some of these! I have a elc top load washer. I wet pail my prefolds/inserts and dry pail my covers. I use a homemade detergent (castile soap, baking soda and Oxy...no borax, no washing soda...should add I do not have hard water at all). I don't like commercial detergents, especially Tide because of 1,4-dioxane. I always start my load at night. I put them in and do a quick wash-cold 1 tbls. detergent-then refill-cold 1tbls detergent-and turn off to soak. Being pregnant I am always getting up through the night to go to the bathroom. On my first trip I will add a few drops of TTO (as a disinfectant) to the load and start letting it go through a full wash and rinse cycle while I go back to bed. On my second trip to the bathroom I reset and do a hot wash/cold rinse (but no detergent this time), so it's basically a hot rinse then cold rinse while I again go back to bed. Once every 4-5 washes I will use Dawn instead of my detergent to try to catch any buildup early. I line dry everything, unless it's raining in which case I will use the dryer for the prefolds/inserts but try to let the covers air dry as much as possible. I've not had any odor issues with this routine. The only thing I have that I'm not fully satisfied with this routine is my Thirsties Duo AIO.....they don't stink really, but I just don't like the way they smell. Everything else comes out with a fresh clean smell, but with the Thirsties it seems there is something lingering? Not a poo or ammonia smell either....it's hard to explain. They are soooooo thick though so I don't know if maybe they need an extra rinse or two? Hate to waste the water for that though as I have mostly prefolds and pockets. Anyways, that's my routine. the whole night washing thing is pretty much a matter of convenience/economy. Our electric rates are lower then so since I'm getting up so much anyways it only makes sense to go ahead and do it. Once I have the baby and she starts sleeping through the night I guess we'll go to all night presoaks and just wash in the mornings.

I recently, within the last month or so, started up with the Tide. I was using up to the first line (using a HE washer) but I am going to start using up to the 2nd line, followed by an extra rinse. I have hard water, as of 3 months ago.
With soft water I used 1 scoop of charlies, extra rinse AND I did all of this with cold water, quick wash. Ahhh the joy of soft water.
RLR works wonders too. You can get them at most cloth diaper stores.
I have two different brands of diapers. One is Charlie Banana and the other is Just Simply Baby. I am so confused on how to go about washing them. The Just Simply Baby diapers instructions say to do a hot rinse first, but the Charlie Banana diapers say not to use above 104* F. There is a problem with our hot water in the apartment and I have the heater set at 140* to get a hot shower, but I don't know what temperature water is being used in the washer. How can I wash these together so I don't have to do two separate loads?
There is a lot of confusion about whether to do a warm or a cold pre-wash. Half the instructions out there say to do a cold pre-wash because a warm one would "bake in stains". The other half say to do a warm pre-wash because a cold one will "set the stains" before the following hot wash cycle.
I have found that doing a cold pre-wash leaves a lot more stains than a warm one, so that's what I'm going with. When we were at my parents' cabin this summer I happen to see the water coming out of the mashine after the pre-wash - I will not describe the look of that water but let me tell you after that I am going with a short warm (104 deg) wash cycle including a few rinses as pre-wash rather than just one quick cold rinse (no detergent)!
Then I do a hot (140 deg) wash (anything above 122 deg will kill yeast) with RG hard rock (we have really hard water) before I do either a cold or warm extra rinse cycle.
I have an LG FL but with the shorter programs the water level seems to be fixed and not depend on the weight of the load. So if I wash a lot of diapers I usually try to add some water through the soap dispenser. Before each wash I do a quick "rinse" with no spin cycle - it will soak the diapers so they are full of water (and also heavier) before starting the wash cycle.

Autumn, I was wondering if you do a seperate cycle for your pre-wash or just add the pre-wash on to your wash cycle? Hopefully that makes sense! I have the same washer and have never used the pre-wash setting before washing diapers. I watched a video online of someone with a Samsung washer and they just put in vinegar in the pre-wash compartment and tide in the detergent compartment and then washed on Heavy Duty.
Autumn, should I be concerned that my clean diapers have a faint bac-out smell? My routine in a Speed queen commercial f/l with no fancy setting options: warm wash delicate cycle (more water that way) with a full country save scoop of bac-out, cold rinse, extra rinse hot wash regular cycle with a full scoop of country save, cold rinse, extra rinse 2nd hot wash regular cycle no soap, cold rinse, extra rinse cold wash regular cycle, cold rinse, extra rinse After all of that I can smell the bac out when I'm pulling the diapers out of the washer and a faint smell of it in the inserts. Do I need more rinses? Less bac out? Or no worries?
