Hi all, I am a new mom and cloth diapering my almost 3 week old. During his first week of life he developed a yeast rash right around only his anal opening that was pretty easily treated with medicated ointment (nystatin) and I used liners in his diapers while we were doing that. Things were great for about another week but in the last few days he has developed a very red bottom that is getting worse. It isn't raised or bumpy like the yeast, it's just red and angry-looking.
This new rash is again right around his anal opening but is now spreading onto his little butt cheeks. It got a lot worse yesterday--he had several bowel movements yesterday, which is unusual for him. He is formula fed so he usually only poops a couple times a day. I am using prefolds and covers but also tried a one size pocket last night to see if it would keep him a little drier. I change him at least once every 3-4 hours before he eats, sometimes more, and use cloth wipes with water and a little Homestead Baby wipes companion concentrate. When his bum was looking good I was using the Angel Baby Earth Mama bottom balm. Now that it is looking so red I am using California Baby diaper cream which is zinc oxide based (it says it is safe for cd's but I am using liners just in case). Wash routine: cold rinse, hot wash cycle with 1.5 Tbsp Rockin Green, cold rinse. I have checked that there are no suds in the last rinse cycle.
I gave him a bath today with baking soda in the bath water and have tried to let him air out a little every day, even though he hates it.
I'm just not sure what to do at this point. It seems to me like his poop is the most likely culprit, but nothing I'm doing is helping and things are getting worse despite me trying to use the barrier cream starting yesterday. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks.
Thanks Autumn. I forgot to mention, i did use GSE in the rinse water for 2 washes. Do I need to do it more? I was going to do it again in a week as I thought I had read that somewhere...Can I use GSE preventatively? If so how often would I use it?
