I'm currently cloth diapering my daughter with OS mostly bumgenius and a few (2) fuzzibunz. She's a year old, just shy of 22 pounds and about 31.5" with incredibly skinny legs (like both of her parents, unfortunately). We've been having crazy leaking out the leg-holes issues for over a month. It's usually just the edge of the leg elastic right where it meets her thigh, but its enough to get her bottoms all wet. I've also noticed that it's wet on the outside of the shell. I've tried buttoning the sides of the BG diapers to the smallest fit and tightening up the elastic on the FB, but nothing is working well. The inserts are usually quite wet, so I don't think we have a repelling issue. Also, it usually looks like the insert is getting squished up in the middle so it's not extending out to the leg elastic, but shouldn't the waterproofing hold the liquid in?
Do I need to switch to a different kind of diaper? If so, any suggestions for skinny babies? If not, any suggestions on how to make this work with what we got? We'd like to have a stash we use for several children, and I expect due to genetics our kids will probably all be skinny. Thanks so much!

Sterling was my skinny cloth diaper baby. Side snapping diapers work great because you can get a tight fit on the thighs. I liked using Grasshopper Diapers AIOs.
I have similar issues with my very skinny baby boy... 31 inches and 18 lbs at 9 months. I've found I have to increase the absorbancy in the diaper (pockets) or change more often. but with fitteds and covers, I almost never have such issues, and I can get a great fit.

Ok, I'm pretty new to this whole thing - so bear with me! I know what fitteds are, but would covers just be a prefold with a cover? I think we can afford to give prefolds a try, but we're on a big budget constraint so I don't think I could invest in a whole new set of fitted diapers. Thanks mamas!! Autumn, thank you SO MUCH for starting this! What a wonderful resource!

EB, when budget is tight there are creative ways to get diapers. Mother's Day, birthdays, anniversaries ... Ask family to forgo normal gifts and shop from your Amazon registry (or wherever).

i love softbums and the grovia aio for my skinny one. works great. i also get a nice fit with the new thirsties aio with added booster. for sure a fitted (for us again thirsties works best) with a wrap will also be bullet proof.
I'm going to try some hemp inserts to see if it's an absorbency problem. We're also going to try mothers-ease fitted diapers and a wool cover for nighttime!

Smart Bottoms work pretty well on skinny babies. They have an extra snap on the hip/leg and allow you to get a really snug fit around the legs. Soft Bums might also be an option. They have adjustable elastic around the legs too.
