I have been thinking for a long time about cding but just haven't taken the first step and purchased any. I have been doing alot of reading (including Autumn's guidebook...excellent read) and decided to take it slow at first. I want to start by purchasing some cd's to use when we are at home and at night. I feel like if I can get the hang of using them, cleaning them and a good idea of what I will need then I will be better prepared to transition to using them all the time. I also have to prepare my daycare lady to use them as well. What I am hoping for from this post is to get some recommendations as to what are the best choices for this age group and size to use at home and for overnights. I can read until the cows come home but I appreciate any feedback i can get from experienced moms. I hope that by the time we have our next child that I will be much better versed in cding and ready to use them from the start.
Decided to take the plunge. I'm going to order the cloth diaper trial package from daiper daisy and see how it goes. Has anyone else ordered a trial package to help them get an idea of what they like and works best for them?
I wanted to cloth when i was preggo with #2, i did some (limited) research and i found i think Gdiapers. Whatever i was looking at i saw you had to buy these disposable inserts and i was like well that makes no sense, your not saving money and i basically stopped looking. Now im preggo with #3 (and last) so i started looking more into it. I started my daughter (#2) who is 22 months. I went cheap route, i got Sunbaby, Alva, Kawaii to start with. I bought some new from each place, and then got used ones from facebook groups etc. Then i found out about co-ops, so i ordered more. I also got like one rumparoo, one happy heiny, one fuzzibun (the more expensive brands) so that i could see if i liked one more then another. I spiraled out of control and had like 70 diapers within a month. VERY addicting. I have recently sold some that i didnt like (like size 1 or presize sunbaby they were too small). Right now i have to stuff mine with a MF, Hemp, AND bamboo just so she doesnt wake up wet at night. I have some Kawaii heavy wetters that i just got that i need to prep and have got a couple of prefold fitteds and covers on the way to try at night. Id say just buy one or two of a bunch of different brands and styles. When you find the one you like then get more. Check out facebook groups (not sure if i can link any) and worst case scenario you sell the ones you dont like and lose a buck or two (if not make money) My biggest issue is the wash routine. Trying to figure out what works, because nothing does for me. And what works for me, its almost 99% positive it wont work for you. Im about to buy a used old washer with an agitator and hook it up to my hose outside.. lol
Trial packages are a great idea! You'll quickly find what you like and don't like. I didn't begin using cloth diapers until my 2nd child was 15m old! It's never too late :)

Here is the list of diapers i am getting in my rental. Do you recommend one over another for nighttime use... 1 FuzziBunz Elite One Size Pocket Diaper and inserts 1 bumGenius 4.0 One Size Pocket Diaper and inserts 1 Blueberry Simplex 2.0 All-in-One Diaper 1 Bummis Easy Fit One Size All-In-One 1 Thirsties All-in-One Diaper 1 bumGenius Freetime All-in-One 1 Flip All-In-Two One Size Diaper with one stay dry and one organic cotton insert 1 Applecheeks Little Bundle with 1 additional bamboo insert 1 Blueberry Fitted Diaper 1 Rumparooz One-Sized Cover 2 Diaper service quality prefolds
Also 1 more question...Liners vs. doublers vs. soakers...in what situation do you use each? Are they all necessary? IMY MIND IS SO OVERWHELMED...even after all the reading I have done...sigh
If its an all in one, that means the liner is attached inside the diaper so you dont need another one. (unless heavy wetter) to me (and im still new too) an insert, doubler, soaker is all the same thing just different name. A liner, i assume is to catch the poop. You can use fleece/flannel/or the disposable kind put that on top of the diaper next to babys butt, and when they dirty it, that can be thrown away (or cleaned if fleece/flannel) You can add an extra insert (or doubler/soaker) to an all in one if you need additional protection (but you have to be careful what it is made of because some cant go against babies skin)
So should I be using a liner to catch the poop? So in the case of an AIO with a pocket you would just lay the liner on top of the pocket. Is this the typical method to catch the poop or is there an alternative (other than not using something)?
Liners are not necessary. You can purchase disposable ones if you want easy clean up of the poop but in my experience they never work as well as I think they should. Microfleece liners are great if you need a stay dry barrier for a fitted or natural fiber inner diaper.
Doublers are usually hemp but can be bamboo or cotton. They are for adding extra absorbency like for naptimes or other extended use times. Kissaluvs has a super cotton one that is great but my favorite doubler is the Hemp Babies doubler. They are really thin and you can add them under microfiber for super absorbency.
Soaker is simply the portion of the diaper that does the absorbing.
As for your first question, the diapers you will want to use for nighttime are the FB, BG or Thirsties. BUT, you will want to ADD 2 Hemp Babies doublers. Lay them UNDER the microfiber.
You could also use the Flip but you will need another insert. There are lots of nighttime solutions possible you just have to work the absorbency. It would be bulky but you could wrap one of the prefolds around 2 microfiber inserts and lay in the Rumparooz cover.
Play around and see what you like best.

Okay so 1 problem...my bumGenius and FuzziBunz both pocket diapers...they each came with 2 inserts...1 I know is Microfiber and the other I don't know what it is...however the unknown ones seem to be the same. The are smaller than the microfiber inserts and are very soft and smooth (does this make sense)? I am just wondering what they are...
Okay so last night we used the BumGenius 4.0 One Size Diaper and ended up stuffing it with 2 one-size microfiber inserts. She seemed to sleep good or at least the same but this morning I did notice that her skin was wet almost tacky feeling. The inserts were soaked and so I'm thinking that may be part of them problem. I am hoping that my hemp inserts arrive today so I can pair them with the microfiber. Does anyone have any other recommendations as to how to stuff the diaper for night time use?
We had our first major leak today...Swaddlebees Simplex 2.0 AIO on the 3 hr car ride home. She was wet all the way up and down her back and the carseat had to be taken apart and washed. I actually really like this diaper, guess just not for long car rides.
I started cding my daughter at 17 months and it was definitely better late than never. It was difficult to take the plunge because there is so much information out there, but we've been doing it for a few months now and I love it! We use the BG 4.0 AIO and I haven't had any problems with leaks, even overnight. For nighttime we just use both the regular and newborn MF insert and she stays dry until morning. I just bought a few hemp inserts so I'm going to try those at night with the regular MF insert and see how it goes.
