I hear ya Amie! I got some Gerber flats as a shower gift, but have never used them as anything but burp cloths....maybe I will get brave and try them ;)
So I gave the Gerbers a shot and they work pretty well, it tooke me a couple trys to get the fold down but I got the hang of it. I dont know if I could do it for a week and have to hand wash though at least not this year Im finding it hard enough to find time to take a shower lol.
When is it going to be held this year? I'm thinking about doing it. What flats do you recommend? Are there some that are more absorbent than others? I only have a few prefolds from when I first started cd'ing and before I switched to pockets.
I'm not doing Kim's challenge, but I can answer some other questions.
Good Flats: Swaddlebees has good flats. They are a true square which is very helpful if you are trying something like my favorite origami fold.
How to fold flats: I have some good tutorial links on my Pinterest Board here... http://pinterest.com/boisewiebers/cloth-diapers/. Currently I am trying out the Jo fold on my 19 month old daughter. It's super easy and is working well for the past two weeks.
I think all basic birdseye flats are probably the same as far as absorbency is concerned. You can use items such as receiving blankets too.
