I just started using cloth diapers. My daughter is almost 6 months old. I bought some cloth diapers the brand sunbaby and we aren't having much luck with them. My babysitter more than me. I always have to leave 3 and 4 outfits for my daughter because of all the accidents. She says that it comes out from legs like she can't get the legs tight enough. Now the diapers that I bought are one size pocket diapers with inserts. They leak and just don't seem to last but two or three hours and forget trying to get them to last through the night Now I don't know if it is the inserts or if it is because we don't know what we are doing. Please help me!!!!! I love using cloth diapers but they are becoming frustrating.
Just as every baby is shaped differently, every cloth diaper brand fits differently. There are some online stores that offer trial packages (even in sizes bigger than newborn) for you to find a good match. That being said, check you washing routine--make sure all the suds come out in the rinse, if not keep rinsing. Also, you might want to try more inserts in the pockets or different fabrics for the inserts.
You will go through more CDs than disposables in a day. I change my 14 week old at least 12 times a day, sometimes up to 16 times.
I second that...we've tried different brands and styles to find ones that fit my long, chubby baby well. Prefolds and covers are more work, but work very well in my experience. Autumn has a post on her blog about what diapers fit different baby bodies well...it's helped us a lot. I was having the same problem with my FuzziBunz OS diapers, we just couldn't get a good fit and had lots of leaks. Now we're using Best Bottoms which have worked incredibly well for us, not a single leak. Sustainablebabyish fitteds and wool covers are GREAT for nighttime...we haven't had a single leak since we've been using this combo at night (10-12 hours, with hemp and bamboo inserts in the fitted at night). Hope that helps!
I agree with the making sure all of your suds are coming out in the wash....as an extra precaution you may want to go ahead and strip to make sure you don't have a buildup. If your inserts are absorbing good you really shouldn't have immediate leaks even if you don't have the best fit around the legs. I also second the changing cd's more frequently....you said they are lasting 2-3 hours which sounds about average. Some diapers are just more absorbent than others, so if you know the time frame within which they start leaking just make sure the sitter knows to do a change within a half hour or so before the "leak window". Nighttime usually does require more than your average diaper. We use a hemp fitted with 2 inserts and a wool cover at night....the only time I have ever had a "leak" was when it was time to relanolize, and then it wasn't really a leak, it was just that I could actually feel the wetness of the wool cover.
