Has anyone ever had a milk blister before?? I think I have one....something is definitely not right and is causing pain in my right nipple when I nurse my 10 month old son. At first I thought my nipple was tender because he was nursing more because he's teething, but now it's pretty painful and there's a small red bump that is the source of the pain. Any tips??
Maybe try repositioning him with a different hold. Like if you normally use a cradle hold, try a football hold. This will help reposition where the majority of the pressure is when he's nursing. It could very well be that while nursing he is exerting a bit more pressure to help ease the pain which is causing the blister. Hopefully by repositioning him and changing the area of pressure it will let the blister heal. If that doesn't help you may want to try pumping for a bit (if he will take a bottle). In between feedings I would use some lanolin or coconut oil on it to help with the healing process.

Thank you! I'm still not sure what this is or what caused it red spot, but I'm doing warm salt water soaks and warm compresses and coconut oil or garlic oil. There is a small yellow spot in the center of the red spot, so hopefully it's not getting infected. No other pain though, so hopefully this passes soon!
I get a lot of milk blisters usually if I wear a bra that is not 100% cotton, rush a feeding while out or get stressed. Nursing more on the blister side in different positions, napping, hydrating and compresses help. If it is a true milk blister, the yellow (or white spot) is sorta congealed milk and you can use a sterilized needle or a super clean finger nail to try to lift an edge.
This is definitely NOT a milk blister. It's a red sore with a hole in the middle...the hole started really small a few days ago and has gotten bigger. It's also become more painful, especially when I nurse. This is not fun at all. I'm trying not to be a big whiner, but I'm ready to be done with this. Praying it will heal quickly...
Hopefully you are feeling better by now! If not I would suggest seeing your doctor to rule out bacterial infections such as staph. I noticed you mentioned you were doing warm salt water soaks which can be good for general infection, but staph actually thrives on salt and if it were such then it would be feeding the infection. Hopefully it is not that, but better safe than sorry!

Thank you, I really appreciate that! I am feeling so much better! My midwives helped me through it, and after several days of pumping and taking really good care of that breast, I'm almost as good as new :)
That happens to me ALL THE TIME but mine is painful. what did your midwife say it was? I went to my ob and contacted the Leleche League asked every nursing mother I knew and all pretty much agreed it was a bleb ( milk blister ) I was told to do the soaks, change positions, get a needle and try and get it out cause it was causing plugged ducts. I tried it all but still... pain and it looks like a little blister but when I tried the needle idea, there was nothing in there?? Just like a hole, like if I were to get a blister with nothing in there??? They drive me CRAZY and come ang go ALL THE TIME! My son is 9 months and these stared probably around 4 months. I am determined to nurse him for a full year though, no matter how much pain I go through but I would love and welcome Any new advice or info.
Hi Mindy- my midwives said it was not a blister, which is what I originally thought it might be. It never had a little bubble on it the way blisters do. This was a little hole in my nipple that was a wound and ended up getting infected. So my midwives told me to stop nursing on that side and pump. I had to soak that breast as long as I could in warm salt water and then gently clean the wound with antibacterial soap and a wash cloth to try to get it to drain. Then they had me make a paste with honey and goldenseal powder to put on it. After each pumping I would soak and then clean with soap and then put antibacterial ointment and Western Botanicals Tissue repair ointment on it. Once I started doing what they told me, I immediately started healing. I had to wait about 3-4 days before I could nurse my son on that side again. I think I got a small wound on the nipple from my son nursing do much while teething, and I kept nursing him on it and it got worse and then infected. I'm not sure what it means if nothing drains out, but if there's an actual bubble, it sounds like a blister. Kelly Mom website has a picture of a milk blister and lots of good info...maybe try pumping for a day or so until it feels better? Its awful to nurse through that pain! If you do pump when you have one of these, use some coconut oil or a nipple balm, it helps.
