I am hearing a lot about pre folds and covers. Are these a better option then a pocket diaper or ai2 for a new born (girl)? Also price wise is this a better choice?

I only used prefolds and covers so I'm a bit biased...Newborn poo is runny, especially if you BF. You will be less likely to use an AI2, or a cover, multiple times.
We used 14-16 diapers a day taking into account the changes where my little one wasn't all done with the business at hand. Prefolds tend to have a shorter drying time than other styles of diapers. Prefolds run about $30ish per dozen. Covers start at $9 and go up to $18. I've used econobum, thirsties, thirsties duo, imse visse covers. I like the econobums for the first 2 months, then the thirstes sized covers have been my go to.
If I were to do it all over again, I would use fitteds and covers for the newborn stage. -
Ok great. A friend just donated some prefolds and covers so I'm excited to try them. Is there any secrets or special ways to fold or add extra absorbency that I should know about. What about fastening the prefold before putting the cover on.

I'm currently using prefolds on my newborn, and have been doing so for about a month now. There are several different types of folds... here is a link that shows several options http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDqa45EOHfE . As far as fastening them you can use a pin (like a big safety pin) or you can use a snappi or a boingo (I believe that's what it's called). I have two types of covers ProRaps newborn size, and rumparooz newborn size. I personally have a difficult time getting the ProRaps cover to fit over all of the prefold, but can do this with ease with the rumparooz...so I would recommend that one. I change my daughter at every feeding (every 2-3 hours), even at night. While her diaper is completely saturated, the prefold itself has been sufficient for me. I would think you could add an another insert inside the cover, for extra absorbency.

ok thank you for the info ill check out the video. can you reuse the cover more then once? and does your daughters sink seem to be really wet when you change her or does the prefold wick the liquid away? im worried about diaper rash.

If you are worried about wetness against the skin you can always add a microfleece liner or insert. Microfleece draws wetness away from the skin. We used CJ's BUTTer after every dirty diaper and haven't had a rash ever (nearly 9 months.)
You can use covers more than once. We would wash if they got poo on them or hadn't been washed in a few days. -
ok i will look for some microfleece inserts. what about bamboo i know i have a few bamboo boosters and a few grovia boosters already or is microfleece the best

what is the difference between the colors on green mountan prefolds?
what are your thoughts on all microfleece prefolds

If you are trying to save money (and who isn't these days) don't buy microfleece inserts. You pick up some microfleece from JoAnn's or Walmart and cut it to the size you need, or repurpose a microfleece blanket or rags.
The colors are different sizes on the gmd prefolds. Orange is newborn, yellow is small, red is medium and brown is large. This is a bit text heavy but explains it well http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/prefolds.htm -
im sure i can make my oun inserts seems easy enough. i just got some used prefolds and a few covers donated to me not sure the brand but i think they will work well. green mountain are more afordable then i thought brand new. the going rate on used is almost the same. 2 of the covers feel like microfleece. will these be ok on top of the prefold or do i need a pul cover?

She is damp, but like Rg1234 said, if you use diaper rash cream you should be okay. I didn't do that at first and had to combat a rash almost immediately. Make sure you use a cloth diaper safe rash cream though, as you will otherwise have repelling issues. I use CJ's Butter as well, and it seems to work well after a month of use. I have Green Mountain Diapers, and they work well and seem to be of high quality, granted I have not tried other brands. If the cover is microfleece....I think you would still want another cover, as fleece is not water proof, but I am not positive on that.

so if i use the prefold with microfleece cover im going to need another cover on top of that? seems like alot of layers. what about just changeing the cover every time. the microfleece covers that i have are an xsmall and i cant remember how much a newborn wets. would this be safe for the just the day time i have a pul xsmall cover for night

should i used diaper rash cream right when i bring her home just to prevent or wait until a rash starts? its been 7 yrs since my last child and he is a boy so im starting all over again
