From Blog Reader to Boutique Owner on a Leap of Faith

Interviews, WAHMs

As a writer, my goal is to influence and assist readers in their quest to cloth diaper their children.

It’s an even greater blessing when a reader takes that passion and information and channels it into a retail store!

Tara of Half Pint’s Baby Boutique did just that! When she contacted me and said she was a dedicated reader I knew right away what to name this post.

I asked Tara if she would share a little about herself and how she got started in cloth diapers.  No doubt if she lived near me we’d be fast friends!  Alas, Tampa is quite a drive for a play date.

An Interview with Half Pint’s Baby Boutique

Tell us about your family.

My husband and I have been married for 3 ½ years and we have one, amazing son who is 8 months old. We definitely plan to expand our family with more children in the future, but right now we are enjoying every minute with our son. Since we have become parents we are so amazed at how fast time flies, and how quickly children grow and change!

We live in a small strawberry town in Florida. Before I became a mom I was a teacher, who had a passion for Literacy Instruction. Now that I’m a mom I stay at home with our son. I’ll be teaching him soon enough!  My husband works hard to support us as a forensic analyst.  We enjoy spending time together as a family and most of that time is spent outside in the wonderful Florida sunshine!

During football season you can actually find me using my spare time to work on building my fantasy football team, or watching football. Soon, we will take our son to his very first football game, but he’s not quite old enough to appreciate it yet! J We feel tremendously blessed to have to opportunity to be parents, and we are enjoying this new chapter of our lives.

When did you start using cloth diapers?

I started using cloth diapers when my son was born (8 months ago), but I started researching and buying them when I found out I was pregnant with him. At first I was so confused. I couldn’t believe how many options there were and how many acronyms were used for things. I was totally lost!

Then, I came across All About Cloth Diapers while doing a Google search. I was so excited to finally find some helpful information. I even remember telling my husband about it and how excited I was to find some information from a mom who cloth diapered and had tons of information on her website.

That is where my love for cloth began!

Before that, I wasn’t totally committed to using cloth because I just felt so overwhelmed. After I found All About Cloth Diapers I felt confident and comfortable to commit to using cloth. I made that decision and haven’t looked back since!

Why did get into the business of making/selling of cloth diapers?

I try to live as naturally as possible. I try to avoid chemicals whenever possible and strive to not sacrifice the health of my family for convenience. I knew some moms who cloth-diapered in our community, but we really didn’t have any resources in our area. I thought this should change. I jokingly threw the idea around at first, and finally my husband said “Just do it, open your own cloth diaper store.”

I took that leap of faith and did it!

The name “Half Pint” came from one of my favorite shows growing up-Little House on the Prairie. I just thought it made the perfect name for a baby boutique. I chose Psalm 127:3 as a motto for us because I truly believe ALL children are a gift from God, and should be treated that way.

I enjoy buying and researching products for our store, and sending fluffy mail to our customers. I always think about the smiles that package will bring when it arrives.

What makes your product(s) unique? Why should a buyer choose your product(s)?

We have a variety of diapers and products on our store. Our inventory is not huge, as we are a new store, but it is continually growing! We offer several different, brands, styles, and fabric & fiber options for our customers to choose from. We also offer free shipping on orders over $40.00 and most orders are shipped the day they are received.

We are continually adding new products to our store. All of the products will hopefully make living naturally a little easier. When customers buy products from my store they know they are supporting a family and work-at-home mom behind the business.

If you are a retailer, what is your favorite product?

This is such a hard question!

I like all of my products for different reasons. I will say I like the Peachy Green Solo Luxe AIO for daytime use and the Rump-a-Rooz G2 pocket for nighttime use.  I use both of those on a regular basis.

However, I could tell you positive things about all of the products in my store. I carefully choose the products that I sell in my store. One of my favorite things about opening my store has been meeting all of the moms behind the businesses. I have met some awesome moms since I’ve opened my store!

What is your go-to advice for parents new to cloth diapering?

I have learned so much from the cloth diapering online community. My advice for parents new to cloth diapering would be to research and get involved in the cloth diapering community. You can learn so many things that will save you time and money, and you just might meet some awesome families along the way.

Always nice to know about FL fluff resources! It’s nice to see someone have that thought that so many of us have had–to start a store with your favorite items–and actually make it work out!

      Jamie,
Thanks for letting me know. I am aware of it, but you are right. It’s certainly weird! It’s only happening on cellphones. Were you using your cell phone? I do apologize, but for some reason the site is currently not compatible with cell phones. We are working on getting the shopping cart compatible with phones. Until then, it will work fine on the computer! Thanks again for taking the time to let me know, and hopefully soon our mobile site will be up and running!!

    Hi Autumn,

I think you do not realize how many moms you have already helped realize their dreams through this blog! I am one of them! I became a mom-preneur and a successful cloth diapering mom because of this site! Like Tara, I was just researching about modern cloth diapers when I stumbled upon your blog. I asked a question about washing. You responded. Everyday I would lurk. I eventually subscribed. And then got an idea about selling cloth diapers here. I would click each and every one of your blog sponsors to check out their site for inspiration and see what I can sell (if they wholesale and I can afford their wholesale price). I even noted down your recommendations on what are best cloth diapers so eventually I could add them to my store. Oh and my favorite cloth diaper stores are the ones who I stumbled upon while reading one of your posts! I hope to be as big Jillian’s Drawers someday and as knowledgeable and influential as you!
Keep up the good work, Autumn! By the way, I love the new look of your blog!
    More power!

    Warm regards,
    Em
