Cloth Diapers at Night Part 1: Fitteds {twinkie tush night-night Review and Giveaway}

Too scared to use cloth diapers at night? Maybe you tried to use cloth at night but your baby had wet pj’s and sheets in the morning. Or perhaps you just want to try something new? Hopefully, this nighttime cloth diapering series will answer many of your questions and lay your concerns to rest. Your kid CAN go 12+ hours at night in a cloth diaper without leaking. The trick is finding what works for you and your little one.

First up: Fitteds! {next up is wool covers}

A fitted cloth diaper is something where the WHOLE diaper is the absorbent part. That is why they make an awesome nighttime diapering choice. It has no waterproof layer so it cleans easy and can be made waterproof with a TPU/PUL cover, fleece or a wool soaker. If you want to see more info on what a fitted is and how it works check out this post!

If your baby isn’t a heavy wetter then you might be able to get away with any fitted and a waterproof cover at night. But if your kid is anything like mine, you need to pull out the big guns! For this I recommend a cotton/bamboo blend fitted and a lanolized wool cover.

Many people have found amazing nighttime success with Sustainablebabyish’s Organic Bamboo Fleece fitteds or Sbish OBF’s. That is where I started when I first decided to go all night without changing Sophia’s diapers. She was around 6 months. Up until then we changed her when she woke up to eat. FYI, I will be using overnight diapers sooner with my next!

With the Sbish OBF’s Sophia woke up totally dry every morning. Unfortunately, what happened after a while was that she developed a horrible rash on her inner thighs where the edge of the diaper rubbed. After weeks of trial and error I finally discovered with the help of an awesome pediatric dermatologist that the problem was a friction rash from the serged edging on the OBF’s. We started using Kawaii Goodnight Heavy Wetters (GNHW) and the problem immediately began to clear.

I have been really happy with the Kawaii GNHW, I just miss our fitteds and wool at night. (I LOVE wool!) In comes twinkie tush night-nights! I needed to find something absorbent enough that also had the option for turned and topstitched edges. twinkie tush came HIGHLY recommended and fit the bill. Twinkie tush was kind enough to give me a night-night to review. (Please note, that while I did receive this diaper for free, my opinion and review is honest and true.)  I have to say, I really like it!

Sophia is 21 months and still pees ALOT at night. twinkie tush has been amazing for her. These are made from organic bamboo velour or OBV. This is where one of the biggest differences from a Sbish OBF is noticed. A Sbish OBF will become somewhat crunchy and stiff with use, even Mrs. Meyers only softened it up so much. A twinkie tush OBV stays amazingly soft wash after wash. Also, the option to either have a serged edge or turned and top stitched is huge. We couldn’t use many fitteds at night because of the serged edges.

These are labeled to be used from 12-35 pounds. It uses a fold down rise to adjust sizing. I would say at the smaller sizes that you won’t be using all the included inserts (that’s why it’s great that they snap in separately). These have been drying in one cycle because all inserts snap out to help aid in faster drying.

I am sure you will notice that the price of these is somewhat higher than other fitteds, but I believe it is worth it if you can afford to get one or a few. I want to point out that the quality of the night-night is noticeably impeccable. The materials used are very high quality. Finally, this is a product that is made in the USA, right in my home state of New York!

I asked Mike and Gretchen, the owners over at twinkie tush, to tell us a little bit about their night-night fitteds:

Twinkie tush fitted cloth diapers have always been known for their absorbency, but the Twinkie tush night-night takes it to another level.  The night-night has been called “the Holy Grail of nighttime diapering”, with 18 layers of absorbency from soaker to shell.  Paired with a wool cover, this is a bulletproof nighttime solution.  Twinkie tush night-nights are sometimes stocked a la carte or through pre-order, and are always available in made-to-order 4-packs at twinkietush.com.

Remember that fitteds made of bamboo and cotton blends will be more absorbent than straight cotton. The next part of our nighttime cloth diapering is getting the fitted waterproof. The most bulletproof option is WOOL! Stay tuned for the next installment to see my recommendations on what to use and how to lanolize wool quickly and easily! There is no reason to be afraid of wool and I will show you why. Don’t want to miss any of the cloth Diapering at night series?
