Want to Know How the Soft Bums PerfectFit is Working Out?

facebooktwittergoogle_plusmail

When Sterling was born I couldn’t imagine putting a one-sized diaper on him. Mainly because of his umbilical cord and his super skinny legs.

But as soon as I cut off that horribly big umbilical clamp, I just had to try a Soft Bums PerfectFit on him. Sarah’s brilliant toggle design enables me to tighten the legs while simultaneously shortening the rise for a perfect fit even on an 8lb infant.

I had my doubts about any one-sized diaper fitting a tiny newborn – I did try on a Goodmama, Patooshie Pants nighttime fitted and bumGenius Organics AIO to find they were way too bulky for my preference. But the Soft Bums is not bulky. I use one of the long snap-ins and fold it in the front for Sterling.

More often with a newborn though at a diaper change you’ll find that the cover has gotten soiled. This doesn’t happen every time because of the wide insert but with newborn poop they can all the sudden produce a large amount! I mainly use fitteds and covers with Sterling so it is a nice break to use a Soft Bums. If I use a PerfectFit for overnight I add one of the doublers. As he gets older I’ll let you know how they perform for heavier wetters.

I have found that life with 4 kids leaves me with a lot less time. This blog post took 2 days to write! Every time I get started with a task someone needs a diaper change, a bottom wiped, or Sterling needs to be nursed.

I have had quite a nice break from diaper laundry thanks to my awesome husband! But he has let me know that he’s ready to hand the reins back over to me lol.

Oh, and I’m easily using the same Soft Bums cloth diapers on both Sterling and Paisley.  Paisley is very thick in the waist so she is pushing the limits but theyll last through her potty training.

Sarah has informed me that she is working on a snap version along with some fantastic new prints and fabrics!

    Autumn,

I have found your website invaluable! Right now I am desperate for help and couldn’t think of anywhere else to turn. I have been using BumGenius AIO organic on my now 5-month old since he was born. I also use Soft Bums and Grovia All in Two on my 2 year old. I really like the BG and the SB and have had no trouble with either one. HOWEVER, the kids’ sitter is now complaining of leaking with poopy diapers when the younger one (mostly) has a movement and is requesting that I find a solution or stop sending them in cloth diapers. I can’t stand the thought of quitting cloth, hence my desperation. I was thinking of trying a different diaper for the babyjust to send to the sitter, because I haven’t experienced a single problem myself. Do you have any recommendations for a AIO or All in Two that I can buy to try and convince the sitter to stick with it? Thanks!

I just reviewed Blissful Booty and they have inner leg elastic to help hold in poop. Of course the best at containment would be Rumparooz but that’s a pocket. Thirsties Duo also has good containment, it’s a sleeve diaper.

My daughter is almost 8 months old and I started to use Soft Bums a few weeks ago. I am having trouble at night. At first when she was sleeping on her back, the diaper and her sleeper and sleep sack would smell of urine (but no leaks). Now that she is starting to sleep on her side and stomach, the last 2 nights her sleeper is soaked in the front. I always use a doubler. Have you had this happen? Thanks so much.

Sheila, when tummy sleeping make sure that the insert is folded in the front and that the cover is completely above the insert (and tightly on). You might look into a wool soaker (recycled would be easy to make).

I’m trying to figure out how the insert being so long will work with a newborn, did you use the actual insert? It seems like it would be extremely large for a newborn making you increase the size of the diaper just to fit the insert!

I just bought the whole kit and kaboodle softbums! I LOVE THEM! I am brand new to CD. I have a 21 month old and a baby on the way. My 21 month old has adjusted extremely well. I will say I had to prep the liners a lot to keep from leaking and also one of the toggles slipped through the elastic tract, but I fixed it by fishing it out and pulling it back through to where it belongs. I can’t wait to start using them on my new peanut! :D I love on the website they show a dad doing the diaper changes..convinced my husband!! Thanks for a great blog!

    Autumn,
Do you use the microfiber insert or the bamboo insert? I’m considering purchasing one of the packages and am trying to decide if the bamboo is worth an additional $80.

Whitnie, when I used Soft bums I used both. I found the mf to work just as well as the bamboo. Mf does have a high chance of becoming stinky ;)

I am thinking of trying these. As I feel that tossing the BumGenius 3.0 in the wash after every tinkle is a waste. I like the fact that with Soft Bums you can sit the cover to the side to dry & reuse (like a prefold cover). I am really interested in the snap closures.. wonder when those will be available???

I am so glad to see that they work for your newborn. I am so excited to try them. It is amazing that 1 sized diaper will fit all the way to potty training. Amazing!

I absolutely LOVE Softbums. I purchased just a few to try with my son in preparation for the fact that we’re about to have a second and I thought perhaps life would be easier with only one set of diapers, esp. for use in the diaper bag. The bamboo inserts are extremely soft, the toggles are easy to adjust, and they take up WAY less space in the diaper bag. I can’t wait to get more. Apparently they’re coming out with new colors and prints soon, which I’m really excited about!!

I just got my soft bums in the mail two days ago and used them for the first time today I AM IN LOVE!! My husband an I are very new to cloth diapering and had been using prefolds and covers (which we thought was really easy) on our two year old and now that we have our soft bums that is all I want to use. Thanks for the suggestion and I would recommend them to anyone. Although they took a long time for me to get in the mail it was way worth the wait. Are you just using the hemp doublers in the soft bums with your newborn? The full size snap -ins look a bit large to use on a new baby.

How many of these diapers would you recommend starting off with? I’m due in June, and thinking of using these instead of BumGenius 3.0. And congrats on your new little one!

I’m curious, did you use cloth from day one? If so how did the muconium wash out? I fear it will be a big pain, but maybe not. Tanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to keep us updated!

Andrea, I did use cloth from day one with both Paisley and Sterling. The meconium washed out just fine. On the Mutts with a white insert there is light staining. I have not tried sunning. Stains aren’t an issue for me so I never worried much about it. If you want to avoid stains cut some fleece liners and use those first couple of days.
