My biggest problem is getting the poop off of the diaper. Ok, I know I'm cloth diapering, but still... shouldn't there be any easier way to do this. Dunking the diaper I have to have my diaper pail RIGHT there because I can't stand it dripping. Or, I've even tried using a wipe to scrape it off, but I was using disposable wipes. What am I supposed to do when I start using cloth wipes like I'd like to. This is the only part that bugs me. I've even found a good detergent and found that hanging diapers in the sun works wonders, esp in AZ. I hope somebody has an answer for this. (Yes, this question seems so silly to ask die-hard cloth diaperers.)

Mary Ann, are you financially able to try another detergent? I would recommend contacting Kim of Rockin Green Soap. She is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about washing cloth diapers. You can click on her ad in the upper right corner of the blog. Your wash routine sounds laborious but I understand that this is often the case with front loaders. I pray you are able to find a solution! My gut says it's the detergent. How old are your mf inserts?

Autumn I'm hoping you can help me with some specifics here. I am currently using microfiber/hemp g-flappers. I have a front loader and it doesn't have an option for extra water so I have to pause it and add 2-3 gallons of water once it finishes filling. Let me give you my routine and see if you can find where I need to modify it.

1.) I dry pail and wash every other day. Poopies get fully rinsed and a slight wash off with foaming handsoap and then rinsed again, by hand. Then off to the pail they go. Pees I just put in the pail.

2.) I do a rinse & spin cycle with an extra rinse first. Both rinses are cold.

3.) Sanitize cycle (extra hot water/cold rinse) 2hrs 45mins total time on that cycle. I add 1 tsp. charlie's (that has 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil added to the full 80/90 load bag and shaken thoroughly) and 4 capfuls of bac-out. The bac-out goes directly onto the clothes since it will be in the pre-wash. But the charlie's goes in the detergent dispenser for the regular wash. Sometimes I also add a squirt of dawn right on the dipes when I add the bac-out. I add 2-3 gallons of very hot water to the first main wash and then 2-3 gallons of cold water to the final rinse.

4.) I do a second sanitize cycle without the prewash. Extra hot wash/cold rinse 2hrs 30minutes total time.

5.) I add 2-3 gallons of hot water to the main wash and then 2-3 gallons of cold water to the final rinse and watch for any suds. If suds then I let the cycle finish and do another rinse and spin cycle with extra 2-3 gallons of water and watch for suds. Repeating until no suds. Usually I don't have to do this but occasionally I do.

Then I dry on medium heat.

I tried to do a vinegar soak for 3 hours and that did nothing to help with the stink problem. I also tried to do the wash with 1/2 cup of baking soda and that didn't help.

I just don't know what else I can do about stink. It's ammonia smell that I'm battling. Ironically my diapers are completely stain-free and the only section of my gflappers that has stink issues is the microfiber. It's aggravating!

And why does washing with a squirt of dawn every cycle cause buildup? I'm just trying to understand why something that we would use to strip them would actually cause buildup over time.

Thanks, Mary Ann

Angie, you may want to try a vinegar soak (2 hours in a full basin with 3 cups vinegar). When you get your bac-out squirt 3 big squirts in the prewash.

I have a problem with my 19 month old having consistent rash. I know he is teething, but the diapers smell awful of ammonia no matter how many times I strip. I have tried everything except bac-out. I just ordered some. How do I use it and how much? Any suggestions?

shannon, you can cut fleece or flannel strips to lay in the diapers. here are some safe creams to use: http://allaboutclothdiapers.com/cloth-diaper-safe-diaper-rash-creams/

My DD has a bad rash that isn't going away on its own. I'm afraid to use cream as I don't want to ruin my diapers. any suggestion? Could I make a liner to lay in so the cream isn't touching the diaper? If so what material is best? This is her second one since I started CDing and I had to resort to disposibles last time. I would rather not do that again.

With prefolds I find that absorbency = bulk. I can't imagine a prefold being absorbent enough for nighttime when my 12wk old completely saturates a sustainablebabyish bamboo fitted (which are super absorbent). You may want to check diaperswappers for a couple of pockets. Then you can stuff the pocket with a trifolded prefold and tuck a microfiber towel in the middle. See if that works. If funds allow, blueberry diapers makes an insert that is hemp and microfiber. I had great success with it in a pocket for Paisley (a heavy wetter). As far as wool, you can make a soaker out of a recycled sweater. I have a Little Green Vikings and a Wild Child Woolies soaker listed in the "cloth diapers for sale" category that I used with Paisley.

How do I get rid of the night time bulk? we use prefolds on our 16 month old and 2 yr old. They are big boys ( in height ) and I have the worst time folding the prefolds in the covers to make it so they dont leak.My 2 yr old we have to change twice a night every night because he is such a heavy wetter he wets his bed every night.Talk about the amount of laundry we do just to have sheets for his bed :( But is there a way to fold them so they are smaller or is there something out there that works better? Id love to have a few wool covers but they cost sooo much. Thanks
